With less than 100 days to go until the Commonwealth Games, the idea of my first ever international championship taking place on home soil in Scotland is starting to sink in fast. The days are ticking by rapidly now and so preparations need to be precise. 2014 really hasn’t been easy for me and I have struggled to get consistent training in due to illness but fingers crossed, my luck is starting to change.
Back in 2008, I made my first ever international team for Scotland – Commonwealth Youth Games in India. It really opened my eyes and it was the first time I realised that athletics was what I wanted to do. I wanted to make my hobby a reality. I never thought back then that I would then go on to make the Senior team almost 6 years later. Looking down the list of selected athletes, there are very few who manage to make the transition from junior to senior. India was a complete culture shock, I had never raced out of Britain before and I found it very difficult to race in such extreme temperatures. Thankfully, I won’t have the same problem in Glasgow. I’m sure my body will be well adapted to the cold and wet weather of Scotland.
I will be heading out for the first time to Park City in North America with the rest of the UK Athletics Endurance Squad. Currently, I have scheduled the Eugene Diamond League to be my opening steeplechase of 1st May. I’m really excited to get back racing again and hopefully it will set me in good stead for the rest of the summer!
Another added highlight this season is that I will get to compete at Hampden before the Commonwealths even begin. The Diamond League program has decided to add Glasgow on the program of their international racing series – which is a fantastic event for Scotland to host and the perfect warm up before our Home Games. I was continually informed at the Olympics that nothing would be as loud as the home crowd at a home Olympics but clearly those people had never been to Scotland! I honestly believe it will be like no other competition…I’d better start searching for some ear plugs. Make sure you grab your tickets now!
