I am 35 and gave up smoking 4 years ago. Since then the weight just piled on and even though I wanted to lose it and get fit again, I could never find the motivation or the best way to do so. My diet was shocking and I knew it but didn’t know how to change it or what to change it to. I had joined a gym but never went as I didn’t know what to do when I got there.
Then one day, while on the PTFC website, I came across something called FFIT (Football Fans in Training). It was looking to help overweight men between 35-60 year old become fitter and healthier and I was exactly the kind of thing of that I knew I would feel comfortable at.
I contacted Partick Thistle and was told to come along to the first session. When I arrived at Firhill I was unsure what to expect. I met another guy who was dressed in a t-shirt and shorts at the door. ‘Are you here for fat club too?’ he asked. ‘How did you guess?’ I replied. After that I knew that this was going to be fun as well as helping me to lose weight and get fitter.
We went upstairs and we all introduced ourselves. Very early on the banter was flowing and everyone felt very relaxed. I could see that even though were were all different sizes and ages, we were all there to make a serious effort to get fit.
Scott introduced himself as our FFIT Coach and went through what we would be looking to achieve over the next 12 weeks and how we were going to do it. Seeing these realistic targets and knowing we all had his and each others support, I believed for the first time that I could actually lose some weight.
Over the weeks Scott lead us through the programme. With his expert advice and the guys all sharing tips, I started to lose weight. Not only me but everyone in the group. Scott’s knowledge on nutrition and fitness is second to none and I have learned a great deal from him. My diet has totally changed but I’ve found these changes easy to make.
I have lost over 1/2 a stone in 6 weeks mainly to just changing my diet and now with the introduction of the fitness element, I am very confident that I will lose even more over the next couple of months and get back to the size I was before. I love the fact that people are noticing and making comments about the change in my appearance. Simple things like tying my shoelaces have become so much easier and walking up the stairs doesn’t leave me out of breath.
I am looking forward to the last few weeks of the programme and confident that once it finishes I will have the knowledge and motivation to keep myself going. I will have made new friends and lost he weight I wanted while having fun.
I would recommend the Football Fan In Training programme to any guy who wants to lose weight but is unsure of the best way to do it. I am very glad that I went along as it has helped me make a big change in my life that I would never have done on my own.
